Matt Browne (W 23-25) and Rugby School teachers participate in annual Steele-Bodger Match

On 26 November, over 4,000 spectators gathered at Grange Road to watch Cambridge University 1st XV face the Steele-Bodger XV as part of their Varsity preparations against Oxford. The fixture featured current Rugby School teachers, Simone Elrick (Spanish and Italian) and Henry Higginson (Economics and Business) as well as Rugbeian Matt Browne (W 23-25).

The Steele-Bodger XV, selected by Guy Steele-Bodger (teacher of Economics and Business at Rugby School), is composed of National League players from across the country and is designed to replicate the physical intensity of top-level university rugby.

Cambridge took an early lead with two quick tries, but sustained pressure and strong defence from the Steele-Bodger XV kept the contest competitive throughout, despite being unable to overturn the deficit. After the final whistle, both teams came together to reflect on the contest and celebrate the spirit of the fixture.

Simone commented, “While the result did not go our way, it was an honour to represent Guy and Rugby School. Playing in front of such a large crowd on an occasion of this magnitude, alongside a friend and colleague, made the experience particularly special.”
