ORRTC played Cambridge - Lost 2-5

We lost all of the Singles matches (4) but won 2 out of the 3 Doubles matches. Perhaps should aim for more Doubles when re-arranging the fixture for next year.

William Jewson had a nail-biting 3-set match to start the day losing 5-6 in the 3rd set.

James Firth succumbed to a very on-form Andy Smith in the singles but pulled honours back level by going straight on to win his doubles with his Father – Michael Firth (our Match Manager for the day).

The “old firm” of Oliver Buckley and Richard Bray re-united for the next doubles after Richard’s 3-year absence from the game. “Old form” re-emerged but we were lucky to pull back from 6-7 down in a first-to-8 set with a shot to the Winning Gallery to level the match and some strong hitting in the final game.

Michael Firth lost his singles to Sonja Badenhorst quite convincingly I am sorry to say. Oliver Buckley lost his singles to Guy Kirk almost as badly and we were sorry to lose the final doubles 5-8 in quite a closely fought set. Richard Bray and James Firth battling Andy Smith (still on-form) and veteran Cambridge Fixture Sec Christie Marrian.

We had to get the match out of the way fairly quickly as Cambridge had double-booked themselves with a National League match the same day.

Michael Firth provided a tasty lunch of a Spanish stew with chorizo which was so popular it all went in the first helping. We look forward to addressing the result in next year’s match – more doubles please, Michael
