Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens Vase 2023 winning captain and top try scorer Ryan Sweeting (W 18-23) showed his exemplary leadership skills once again on Saturday 17 May by assembling a squad which proved victorious in the Men's Social Cup in the Oxford round of the LIT Super Series Sevens. Hosted wonderfully well by Oxford Harlequins, the event was a veritable festival of both men's and women's running rugby football. Our players were a credit both to the Rugbeian Society and to their alma mater.
Topping their group with two convincing wins, 38-5 vs 'Find Rugby Now' and 33-7 vs Oxford Brookes Bulls Rugby League, the side subsequently beat Oxford Harlequins Greens 40-7 in the quarter-final, with a guest appearance from the manager. The semi-final vs LU Sevens was an appropriately competitive affair, with the Rugbeians 7-12 down at half-time, but a strong second half brought a 26-12 victory.
The final was tense to the last. The Rugbeians opened up a 22-5 lead but a pair of yellow cards for technical offences allowed Gladiator Sevens to come back to 22-19. A tremendous try-saving tackle by Tommy Taylor (SH 20-22) in the dying seconds sealed the win.
