Our thanks to the Buccaneers for the good-spirited, closely contested game yesterday evening. You’ll be pleased to know that the Faders came away as convincing winners, commended by our opponents for more than our ability to provide a few beers at stumps.
On Tuesday 2 May, the BG Faders (BG parents) took on the BG Buccaneers (BG teachers) on the pitch for what was being fondly described as the ultimate show down of the season.
The Teachers batted first and started well, before our skipper sensed that ‘pace off’ was the way to go and tossed the ball to Anup. Traditionally fast-medium, our canny leader of the attack has taken a few clicks off these days and put every ball on the spot to tie down some good opposition batters. We pushed the strategy a little further and were rewarded when Dhruv took two crucial wickets in quick succession. Success breeds over-confidence of course and the plan reached its bathetic conclusion with Shane Mackay relying on wind assistance to propel his loopers the full 22 yards. But he went for hardly any runs at one end, and David did a similar containing job at the other. A gettable total was set.
When batting we showed our superior ring craft by never allowing ourselves to be bogged down. Shane’s batting is much quicker than his bowling – and Steve in particular worked out the low bounce and prospered by getting into position early and biffing to leg productively. The Buccs’ understandable desire to manage a close result by giving their quicks a second spell was foiled more by luck than judgement: Faders had their two best batsman lurking down the order. John and Ed skilfully got the job done.
In the euphoria of victory Chris may have promised a return fixture later in the season. But first, we have DUFS next week, same day, same time, same place.
