Bilton Grange Society News |
A remarkable story of family and discovery unfolded recently at Bilton Grange, when Joshua Brown uncovered a coin hidden by his grandfather, Jonathan McClintock Leach (BG 43-49), more than 75 years ago.
Jonathan, a former student of Bilton Grange, left behind instructions for his grandson to find the coin, which he had secretly tucked away within the school in 1947. Joshua, visiting the school for the first time, followed the instructions to successfully locate the coin.
"It was a wonderful visit to Bilton Grange," said Joshua. "It was special to see the school my grandfather spoke of so fondly. I can now place the stories I have heard countless times into the correct settings."
The coin, now safely returned to its original hiding place, represents more than just a memento to Joshua. "My grandfather was my hero and more of a father figure than an actual grandfather, though 'grand father' sounds apt. It means I could return to the school in the future to see the coin again—perhaps even to show my children (God willing) and tell them about their great-grandfather who hid the coin in 1947. What a story!"
While the exact location of the coin remains a closely guarded secret, Joshua hopes it will continue to be a cherished piece of family and school history. "From my side, I hope that the exact location of where the coin was hidden can remain a secret."
Reflecting on his visit and his grandfather’s legacy, Joshua shared how the experience has brought a sense of closure and peace. "Bilton Grange has helped me to honour my grandfather, and now my grief can rest and I can 'move on.'"
This heartfelt connection to the past highlights the impact of personal stories and the special role Bilton Grange continues to play in the lives of its former students and their families.
