This highly anticipated competition saw a record number of entries from Rugby School—out of seventy-one pairs competing, six pairs proudly represented Rugby.
Our players enjoyed great success in the qualifying rounds. The well-established doubles pairing of Edward Beard (M 12-17) and Will Hardman (SF 13-18) secured victories against both Cheltenham and Tonbridge. Meanwhile, Rugby’s first pair, Louis Winstanley (M 04-09) and Richard Offord (SF 02-07) , advanced to the quarter-finals of this prestigious tournament, defeating St. Paul’s I, Cheltenham II, and Haileybury I along the way. Notably, Haileybury’s team included Tom Billings, the current doubles World Champion, who, despite playing while injured, proved to be formidable opponents.
In the quarter-finals, Rugby faced Malvern II and, although narrowly defeated, the match showcased first-class rackets played in the true spirit of the game. Malvern II went on to meet Malvern I in the final, marking a great achievement for Malvern and a testament to their dedicated professional, Mark Hubbard.
With over 140 players participating, the tournament also provides a wonderful opportunity for old School friends to reunite, reminisce, and share fond memories of their rackets experiences. The event was a resounding success and was closely followed by our current students, who look forward to entering in the future and continuing Rugby’s proud tradition after graduation.
