Rugby Marks 100 Years of the Percival Guidhouse

Rugby has celebrated a century of lifelong learning at the Percival Guildhouse, with a special event at Rugby School’s historic Old Big School.

The occasion marked 100 years since the Guildhouse first opened its doors in 1925. To honour the milestone, the Mayor of Rugby, Cllr Barbara Brown, unveiled a commemorative plaque inscribed with the words: “The Percival Guildhouse. Celebrating 100 years of lifelong learning 1925-2025. Enriching Every Stage of Life.”

Founded by the Old Rugbeians, the Guildhouse began when they purchased Matthew Holbeche Bloxam’s house on St Matthew’s Street. It was named after Dr John Percival, a past headmaster of Rugby School and strong advocate for adult education. Since then, the centre has provided opportunities for generations of local people to learn new skills and broaden their horizons.

Over the past century, the Guildhouse has survived wartime, economic challenges and funding cuts, but continues to thrive as a hub for education and community life. Its centenary programme included a short-story competition for local secondary school pupils, with winning entries read aloud during the celebration.

Organisers hope the anniversary will not only highlight the Guildhouse’s proud history but also secure its future, particularly as it continues to rebuild student numbers in the wake of the pandemic.

Support also came from the Rugbeian Society, which continues to back the Guildhouse and promote educational opportunities through initiatives such as The Arnold Foundation’s bursary scheme.

As the Guildhouse steps into its second century, it remains dedicated to its founding vision: opening the doors of education to everyone, at every stage of life.
