David Ray recently composed an insightful written piece about the history of the Rugby Mission and Clubs, for a new book titled 'Bright the Vision: Public School Missions from the Victorian Age' edited by Malcolm Tozer. The book explores the history of charitable giving from public schools in the Victorian Age, through chapters provided by twenty-two of the schools involved. With contributions from HRH The Princess Royal, Dr Lucinda Matthews-Jones and the Rt Rev Dr John Inge, Bishop of Worcester, this book describes many of the notable forerunners and forefathers of the Welfare State.
David's essay tells the story of Rugby School's clubs, detailing The School Home Mission clubs which were established and run by Old Rugbeians for members of the working class to take part in activities such as biblical instruction, sports and holidays. David's essay also gives interesting insights into The Fox Mission, The Bradby Club, Future Hope and Rugby Portobello Trust.
A copy of this beautiful book has been placed in the Temple Reading Room, and can also be purchased online.
David Ray taught Politics and Armed Services at Rugby School between 1978 and 2009. He was a Tutor in School House and Town.
