Arnold Foundation News |
At the time I applied to Rugby my family faced a difficult time, especially when my father, a miner, lost his job at the last deep coal mine in Northumberland when it closed down. This required us to move to the midlands and for me to change school part way through my GCSEs. Amidst this upheaval, Rugby School's Arnold Foundation program became a much appreciated and important point of stability in my life. It not only provided me with an outstanding education but also offered personal support at a time of significant change.
My time at Rugby helped to shape and influence my plans for University, providing a wealth of extra-curricular opportunities which diversified my interests and helped make my applications competitive. I initially studied Natural Sciences at Durham University but made a switch after one year to read Medicine in which I could apply scientific knowledge to help others.
I now work as an Ear, Nose, and Throat surgeon. I spend part of my time in clinical practice and part of my time teaching and conducting medical research. I have a special interest in diseases of hearing and balance, and I enjoy serving the community in my home region in the North-East of England. Despite the demanding nature of my work, my family—comprising of my wife and three young children—keep me grounded and motivated.
Even now, years after leaving Rugby, I remain connected to the school community. Attending events and staying involved allows me to give back and stay connected to the place that played such a significant role in shaping my journey.
