We are delighted to take this opportunity to share the story of an exceptional legacy received by Rugby School in 2021. Fox How, a picturesque estate located in the Lake District, England, was famously the home of Thomas Arnold, the influential headmaster of Rugby School from 1828 to 1842. Nestled near Ambleside, the estate is renowned for its natural beauty, surrounded by rolling hills, lush greenery, and stunning views of the fells.
In 1832, Thomas Arnold built Fox How as a retreat for his family, providing a tranquil escape from the demands of school life. The estate became a cherished part of the Arnold family's life, offering both solace and intellectual stimulation. After Dr. Arnold’s passing, his wife and children moved to Fox How permanently, and the estate was inherited by his son, the poet Matthew Arnold.
The estate later came into the care of Reverend Doreen Harrison, a close friend of the Arnold family. In 1995, Rev. Doreen Harrison visited Rugby School, where she was invited to preach in Chapel. It was during this visit that she decided to reunite Dr. Arnold’s house with the School.
When Doreen passed away in 2021, she bequeathed Fox How to Rugby School, having been its owner and occupant for 52 years. We are so grateful for her transformational support.
At Rugby School, all legacy donors become part of the Charles Shorto Legacy Society. Last year, a memorial tree was planted on The Close to honour those who have chosen to leave such impactful gifts and those who will do so in the future.
