We are appealing to Rugbeians who may be able to help us to learn more about an intriguing chapter in Rugby School's history.

In February 1953 the Chairman of Hertfordshire County Council's Education Committee approached Rugby School with a proposal. The County Council asked whether the School would consider admitting two boys each year whose places would be sponsored by the Council. The first two boys were selected in 1954. Candidates sat the Common Entrance examination and were subsequently interviewed by the Head Master and prospective Housemaster before a final decision was made.

The arrangement appears to have formed part of the wider national discussion surrounding access to independent schools following the Fleming Report, which examined ways in which academically able children from state schools might benefit from places at public schools.

This is where we hope our Rugbeian community can help.

Do you remember the scheme? Were you, or someone you knew, a beneficiary of it? Do you have documents, photographs, correspondence, or personal recollections that might help us identify the boys involved and understand their experiences at Rugby?

Any information, however small, could prove invaluable in helping us to document this important story of educational opportunity and social mobility.
